The Royal Hobart Hospital Research Foundation is proud to announce the launch of the Luke Cunningham Research Grant, a $25,000 investment into brain cancer research in Tasmania.
Luke Cunningham was a young Tasmanian who, while on a surfing trip in Bali, received the devastating news of a terminal brain cancer diagnosis. Despite the heartbreak, Luke showed great courage during treatment at the Royal Hobart Hospital, including supporting the CNS Tumour Biobank program — a research initiative funded by the Foundation to better understand and treat brain cancer.
In honour of Luke’s legacy, his family, friends, and community have raised just over $25,000 to support brain cancer research. Thanks to their generosity, these funds will now support a dedicated research grant in Luke’s name, continuing the work he helped to inspire.
Applications for the Luke Cunningham Research Grant are now open, with the successful project commencing in early 2026. This funding will give local researchers the opportunity to pursue new projects focused on earlier detection, kinder treatments, and make positive steps towards a cure.
The Foundation extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed in his honour.
